Punakha, Bhutan

Punakha Bhutan

Punakha serves as the administrative hub for Punakha dzongkhag, one of Bhutan's 20 districts. Previously, Punakha was Bhutan's capital and the government's headquarters until 1955, when the capital was relocated to Thimphu. Punakha is approximately 72 km from Thimphu, and it takes around 3 hours to drive from the capital city. Unlike Thimphu, Punakha experiences mild winters and hot summers. Situated 1,200 meters above sea level, Punakha's primary crop is rice, cultivated along the river valleys of Bhutan's two main rivers, the Pho Chu and Mo Chu. The district predominantly speaks Dzongkha.
